Nakshatra Compatibility Checker

Pick your Nakshatra (and optionally your Pada) and see every other Nakshatra ranked using the classical 36-point Ashtakuta (Guna Milan) framework from Muhurta Chintamani.

Deterministic math, ported from the same engine that powers our Marriage Compatibility tool. No guesswork.

Override Rules

Critical rules that override score totals

Even with a high total score, classical texts say these specific factors must be checked separately. A pair landing in Excellent or Good is still ruled out if any of these red lines fire.

1. Same Nadi = Avoid (Nadi Dosha)

Pairs sharing the same Nadi score 0 of 8 on the most heavily weighted koota. This is considered the most serious dosha in Ashtakoota matching.

Adi Nadi
Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
Madhya Nadi
Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada
Antya Nadi
Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

2. Bhakoota Dosha = 0 of 7 points

Moon-sign relationships of 6 to 8, 2 to 12, or 5 to 9 trigger Bhakoota Dosha and zero out the highest-value moon-sign koota.

3. Gana Dosha = 0 of 6 points

Deva-Rakshasa pairings are the most serious gana mismatch. Manushya-Rakshasa is also strict-zero in the mainstream Drikpanchang reading.

4. Yoni deadly-enemy pairs (avoid)

Seven yoni pairings are flagged as classical enemies. Pairs that fall in these combinations score 0 of 4 on Yoni regardless of how the other kootas land.

Cow ↔ Tiger
Uttara Phalguni / Uttara Bhadrapada ↔ Chitra / Vishakha
Elephant ↔ Lion
Bharani / Revati ↔ Purva Bhadrapada / Dhanishtha
Horse ↔ Buffalo
Ashwini / Shatabhisha ↔ Swati / Hasta
Dog ↔ Deer
Mula / Ardra ↔ Jyeshtha / Anuradha
Serpent ↔ Mongoose
Rohini / Mrigashira ↔ Uttara Ashadha
Cat ↔ Rat
Ashlesha / Punarvasu ↔ Magha / Purva Phalguni
Sheep ↔ Monkey
Pushya / Krittika ↔ Purva Ashadha / Shravana
Important Caveats

Before you act on this table

  1. Pada-level precision matters. Several nakshatras span two rasis (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Purva Bhadrapada). Compatibility depends on which pada the Moon is in, since pada determines exact rasi, which affects 4 of the 8 kootas (Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri, Bhakoota). The table above uses dominant rasi assignment.
  2. Boy-to-girl vs girl-to-boy direction matters slightly. Tara koota is computed in both directions; some other factors (Varna especially) are asymmetric. The table treats both as roughly equivalent, but precise matching needs directional computation.
  3. Dosha cancellations (bhanga rules) can rescue otherwise low scores. For example, Nadi dosha is cancelled if:
    • Both Moon signs are the same (Eka Rashi Nadi Dosha Bhanga).
    • Both nakshatras are the same but padas are different.
    • Moon-sign lords are the same planet.
    • Other specific conditions in Muhurta Chintamani.
  4. Full marriage matching requires more than Ashtakoota. Kuja Dosha analysis, 7th house comparison, Dasha compatibility, longevity matching, and putra yoga analysis all need to be done alongside.
Reading Guide

How to use this table

  1. Find the male's Janma Nakshatra by selecting it in the dropdown above.
  2. Look at the female's Janma Nakshatra and check which tier it falls in.
  3. If in Excellent or Good tier: Strong base compatibility.
  4. If in Acceptable: Worth examining dosha cancellations and the full chart.
  5. If in Not Recommended (below 18): Generally not recommended without strong overriding factors elsewhere in the charts. Open the full Marriage Compatibility tool for a complete reading.

How the math works

For every pair we compute the eight classical kutas (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) using the lookup tables and scoring rules from Muhurta Chintamani. The total out of 36 is then classified into one of four tiers: Excellent (28+), Good (24 to 27), Acceptable (18 to 23), Not Recommended (below 18).

Your Pada selectionsets your moon sign (rasi), which feeds the four moon-sign-dependent kutas (Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri, Bhakoot). If you don't know your pada, Pada 1 is the standard convention. For the 18 nakshatras whose four padas all fall in one sign, pada makes no difference. For the 9 nakshatras that straddle two signs (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, Purva Bhadrapada), the pada determines which sign applies.

The other side of each pair uses pada 1 by default, since this is a one-input lookup table. Your own side is always exact for the pada you select.

Frequently asked questions

How Nakshatra compatibility works, what Ashtakuta scoring means, and how to read the result.

What is Nakshatra compatibility?

Nakshatra compatibility is the Vedic method of comparing two people’s Janma Nakshatras (birth lunar mansions) to evaluate relationship harmony. It is the foundation of classical Guna Milan, since six of the eight koota factors (Varna, Vashya, Yoni, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) are derived from Nakshatra positions.

How is Nakshatra compatibility scored?

The traditional Ashtakuta system scores eight factors out of 36 points based on the Nakshatras of both partners. A combined score of 18 or higher is considered acceptable, 24 to 32 is very good, and 32 plus is excellent. The VediqAstro tool gives you the breakdown by koota and explains the contribution of each.

Can two people with the same Nakshatra be compatible?

It depends on the Pada (quarter). If both share the exact Nakshatra and Pada, Nadi Dosha is often present and needs cancellation analysis. If they share the Nakshatra but different Padas, compatibility is usually fine and can even be quite strong.

What is the role of the Nakshatra lord in compatibility?

Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of nine planets. When the lords of both partners’ Nakshatras are natural friends (Graha Maitri) and well-placed in each chart, the mental and emotional compatibility is naturally strong. Conflicting Nakshatra lords often correspond to perceptual misalignment in the relationship.

Is Nakshatra compatibility enough to decide on marriage?

It is the largest single factor but not the only one. Manglik Dosha analysis, the full chart compatibility (Venus, Mars, 7th house), and the current dasha and transit period at the time of marriage should also be considered. The tool flags all of these so nothing important is missed.

Is the Nakshatra compatibility checker free?

Yes. Enter both partners’ Nakshatras or full birth details, and you get the Ashta Koota breakdown, the matching score, and short interpretations of each koota factor instantly.

Does the order of partners matter in Nakshatra compatibility?

For most koota factors the order does not matter (the score is the same for either direction). For a few, like Tara (based on lunar-day distance), the score is computed bidirectionally and the worse of the two directions is taken to keep the result conservative.
